Youth Advisory Committee

Our Mission

The purposes of the Youth Committee are to train young people in decision-making skills, to provide a forum for youth interests and needs, to commit resources for youth projects and programs, and to involve youth in both volunteerism and philanthropy.

Our History

Established in 1990, the Cadillac and Kellogg for Youth Committee is part of the Michigan Community Foundations’ statewide Youth Project (MCFYP) funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. This program was initiated to build community foundation capacity, to establish youth as philanthropists, and to build permanent and growing funds within each community to meet local youth needs.

Through fund-raising efforts by the Cadillac Area Community Foundation, and the matching funds captured through the generosity of the W. K. Kellogg challenge grant, the Youth Fund had a balance of $2,208,382 Million on September 30, 2024. Interest and dividends earned from this fund are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations within the Cadillac area to fund projects and programs that impact and improve the quality of life for, area youth. The grants are awarded by the Cadillac & Kellogg for Youth Committee, an advisory committee to the Cadillac Area Community Foundation.

Members gain valuable real-world experience, strengthen college and scholarship applications, and develop skills that will serve them throughout their education, careers, and lives.

Youth-Led Philanthropy

Make a real difference in your community. Have a voice in how charitable dollars are invested, help identify local needs, and support programs that create opportunities for youth throughout the Cadillac area.

$2.2 Million Youth Endowment

Help direct funding that creates lasting impact. Gain hands-on experience reviewing grant requests, evaluating community projects, and making recommendations on how funds should be awarded to support local youth initiatives.

Leadership Through Service

Build skills that will benefit you for years to come. Develop leadership, teamwork, communication, and decision-making abilities while working alongside other motivated students who are passionate about making a positive impact.

What Is Expected of Members?

Youth Advisory Committee members play an active role in strengthening opportunities for young people throughout the Cadillac area. Members are expected to attend monthly meetings during the school year, participate in thoughtful discussions, and contribute their time and talents to the committee’s work.

Membership is an opportunity to learn, lead, and serve while working alongside other students who are committed to making a positive difference in their community.

Who can join?

9th or higher grade.

Membership Opportunites

• Attend monthly Youth Advisory Committee meetings
• Assess local youth needs and identify community priorities
• Review grant applications and recommend funding decisions
• Participate in fundraising and community service activities
• Encourage youth involvement in volunteerism and civic engagement
• Help plan and support youth summits, workshops, and leadership events
• Evaluate the impact of funded projects and committee initiatives
• Represent the committee at community and statewide Youth Advisory Committee events

Youth Needs Assessment

Our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) program involves young people as youth leaders and grantmakers, provides a forum for youth interests and needs, and commits resources to effective youth development programs in the Cadillac Area.

One important tool that our YACs use to guide their grant decisions is our the Youth Needs Assessment, which is updated with new data every three years.

Youth Surveys
