Qualified Charitable Distributions

Giving from your IRA

For many of us, being generous with our money is one of the great joys in life. And it turns out that being generous with your IRA can be both personally satisfying and provide tax benefits.

When you reach the age of 70 ½ you can reduce your taxes and make an impact through the Community Foundation with a qualified charitable distribution (QCD)

A QCD can be made that meets your required minimum distribution (RMD) – where annual withdrawals are mandatory.

Further, given the recent tax law changes, if you no longer itemize, your checkbook donations to charity will not reduce your tax bill. Using a QCD for your charitable giving may allow you to take the higher standard deduction while also reducing your taxable income.

We strongly encourage donors to work with your professional advisor to determine the impact of making a QCD on your situations.

Eligible Funds

The following types of funds are eligible to receive QCDs from IRAs

Community Fund

The Community Fund supports the ever-changing needs of our region, helping address today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities through impactful community investments guided by our strategic priorities.

Field of Interest Fund

The Field of Interest Fund connects your personal passions with meaningful community impact, allowing your gift to support causes you care about while remaining flexible as needs evolve over time.

Scholarship Fund

The Scholarship Fund invests in the future of local students, helping learners from preschool through postgraduate studies pursue their educational goals and lifelong dreams.

Other Ways to Give

Assets

Donors have made charitable contribution with securities, closely held stock, real estate (including a residence), insurance policies, or variation combinations of assets. The full-market value of gifts or securities to a community foundation qualifies for a charitable deduction. Foundation staff will be glad to discuss proposed gifts with you.

Charitable Trusts

A Charitable Remainder Trust makes payments to you and/or your beneficiaries for life. On your death or the death of your beneficiaries, the remaining trust assets pass to the Cadillac Area Community Foundation. If you feel you cannot afford to part with any of your cash securities at this time because you need income to live on, you should consider making a gift in trust, which will allow you to receive income from the property as long as you live, and your assets will eventually go to the Cadillac Area Community Foundation.

There are two types of Charitable Remainder Trusts–the Charitable Remainder Unitrust, which will pay a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the annual valuation of the assets, and the Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust, which will pay a fixed amount annually until your death or the death of your beneficiaries.

Gift Annuity

Through a Community Foundation Gift Annuity, the donor transfers assets to the Community Foundation, which in turn guarantees to pay the donor or a named beneficiary a fixed income for life. The level of income is determined by the ages and number of beneficiaries at the time the contract is drawn. Annuity Gifts are placed in an annuity investment fund, backed by the assets of the Community Foundation, and upon death, are released for Foundation use as designated by the donor or the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

Life Insurance

A growing number of people are discovering that life insurance is an effective way of making a charitable gift to the Community Foundation. By assigning ownership of life-insurance policies to the Foundation, the donor receives an immediate income-tax charitable deduction in the amount of the present value of the policies. The proceeds after death of the insured are not taxable as part of the donor’s estate. New policies or existing ones which are no longer needed can also be given.

Bequests

Many donors provide gifts by will or trust. Through a bequest provision, the donor guarantees financial resources to be of lasting benefit to the Cadillac community and also receives immediate personal satisfaction. Bequests to the Cadillac Area Community Foundation are deductible from state and federal estate taxes. This presents a significant advantage, for taxes on estates can be far more substantial than assumed. Through gifts of bequests, a donor designates a specific number of dollars, property, or a designated percentage of the estate to the Community Foundation through a will. The bequest may be unrestricted, designated for a certain use, or directed toward a testamentary fund that is established during the donor’s lifetime and executed through a bequest.

Regardless of the type of gift, the details of your gifts may remain confidential, and you may donate anonymously.

Establish a Fund

The Cadillac Area Community Foundation has great options for establishing a fund that will meet your philanthropic goals and the ever-changing needs of our community. You can choose to start the Fund during your lifetime, or through the Legacy Society.

Any of the charitable fund types that we offer can be established in your name, or in the name of your family, your organization, or anyone you wish to honor. All grants distributed from the fund you establish–today and in the future–are then awarded to charities in the name of that fund.

Types of Funds

Meeting Ever-Changing Community NeedsWhen you establish an Unrestricted Fund, your gift can address a broad range of local needs–including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. We evaluate all aspects of community well-being: arts and culture, economic development, education, environment, health and human services, neighborhood revitalization, and more. The flexibility of your unrestricted gift enables your community foundation’s program experts to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, today and tomorrow.

Community foundations provide a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving. We offer a variety of giving tools to help people achieve their charitable goals.

How it Works– You make an unrestricted gift to your community foundation during your lifetime or through a bequest in your will. You can give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets.
– We set up a special fund in your name, in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization that you choose.
– You receive tax benefits in the year your gift is made.
– Our professional program staff determines the areas of community need that would be most impacted by grants from your gift.
– Our board issues grants in the name of the fund you establish (if you prefer, grants can be made anonymously).
– We handle all the administrative details.
– Your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over time. Earnings from your fund are used to make grants addressing community needs. Your gift–and all future earnings from your gift–is a permanent source of community capital, helping to do good work forever.

More BenefitsBecause you set no restrictions on the use of your gift, it enables our experiences program staff and board to do what they do best – assess community needs and respond by awarding grants to the nonprofit organizations that undertake our community’s most critical work. Unrestricted Funds help your community foundation to support long-term solutions; respond quickly to emergencies; and meet changing social, cultural, educational, or environmental needs in our local community.

If you have created a Unrestricted Named Fund, such as a Memorial or Honorary Fund, grants are made in the name of the fund you establish creating a personal legacy of giving. Your gift may be made immediately or through your will or other estate planning strategy. If you endow your gift, it becomes a permanent community funding resource.

Most charitable gifts qualify for maximum tax advantage under federal law. For more information and ideas on ways to integrate your financial planning with charitable giving, ask your financial advisor or contact us.

A Personal Approach to GivingEstablishing a Donor Advised Fund allows you to make a gift to your community foundation, and then remain actively involved. You can have ongoing involvement in the use of your gift. You work with the community foundation’s professional program staff, identifying ways to use dollars from the fund you establish to address the issues and needs that you care about most. Your recommendations are submitted to our Board of Trustees for approval. Once approved, we then distribute grant dollars in the name of the fund (or anonymously if you prefer). It’s a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving.

What is it?A pass-through fund is like a charitable checking account. The fund provides a conduit through which charitable contributions flow towards a specific project, program, or area of interest. A pass-through fund offers philanthropists the opportunity to give directly to one or several charitable organizations, using all available funds. The fund is not considered an endowment fund, nor are contributions to it invested in the Cadillac Area Community Foundation’s balanced portfolio. The fund is short term and distributions may be made upon request up to the full balance of the fund. Any income earned on a pass-through fund will remain with Cadillac Area Community Foundation.

HighlightsA pass-through fund releases you from the burden of charitable giving paperwork including receipting donors, depositing donations, and posting contributions. The fund is held under the 501c3 umbrella of the Foundation, eliminating the need for the fund to apply for a nonprofit status. The Foundation invests and manages donations to the fund and manages the cash accounts. Fund financial responsibilities such as IRS 990 preparation are included in the Foundation account records.

Charitable organizations can also open a pass-through fund to maximize donations for a capital campaign.

In 2023 we assisted the Band Boosters with the upgrades to the Veterans Memorial Stadium and the City of Cadillac with the
new Pickleball Courts by using our Special Pass Through Fund.

Your gift stays flexible enough to meet community needs in your interest area–even as they change over time.

Nonprofit organizations can use a designated fund through the community foundation to build their endowment and enhance their ability to accept large and complex gifts.
